(text with tooltip) For centuries, the Rosetta Stone has fascinated those studying languages and how we cross between them. The royal decree inscribed on the Stone, issued by Egyptian King Ptolemy V in 196 B.C., is presented in a bilingual format: The Ancient Egyptian text is featured in both hieroglyphic and Demotic scripts, with a translation into Greek inscribed below. Its discovery in 1799 gave Egyptologists the key to deciphering the meaning of Egyptian hieroglyphs.
